Synagogue Shopping at the Supermarket

This past High Holiday season, shoppers at local supermarkets were able to find more than just apples and honey.  Brochures featuring synagogues affiliated with the Rockland County Board of Rabbis were also on supermarket shelves and counters.

“During the fall, Jews are thinking about the High Holidays, about looking for a synagogue, maybe even about religious school” said Cantor Barry Kanarek, Director of the Rockland Jewish Initiative.  “We can’t wait for them to visit our buildings- we have to go out and meet them."

The following supermarkets participated in this first High Holiday drive:

  • ShopRite New City
  • Stop & Shop New City
  • Fairway Market Nanuet
  • Stop & Shop Nanuet
  • Stop & Shop Orangeburg

We’d like to thank these community-minded neighbors for their help.

The Synagogue brochures will next appear on supermarket shelves in time for Passover.  In the meantime, you can download and read the brochure or pick up a copy at the Federation offices or in our display in the lobby of the JCC.
